Peace in the Storm

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Peace in the Storm
Life is full of unexpected storms that seemingly come up out of nowhere. They threaten to swamp us and sink us to the depths of life’s deep seas. The disciples often felt the same way. In these verses, we see Jesus calm the storm that terrifies His disciples. As waves crash and the boat threatens to sink, Jesus sleeps, embodying perfect peace. When awakened, He rebukes the wind and commands the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Instantly, the storm ceases. The disciples, awestruck, ask, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" Christ's divine authority and His presence in our trials are revealed. We often face storms—fear, anxiety, challenges—that seem overwhelming. Like the disciples, we may feel abandoned and cry out, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" Yet, Jesus is with us, ready to bring peace. The Psalmist reminds us, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Trust in Jesus, who calms our storms. He is our peace, now and forever. In life's tempests, hear His words: "Peace! Be still!" Rest in His unshakeable presence.
