Little Seeds

And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

Little Seeds
It is often said that big things come in small packages. Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed. Though it is the smallest of seeds, when planted, it grows into the largest of trees. Chirst reminds us of the seemingly insignificant beginnings of God’s work in the world and in our lives. From the humble birth of Jesus in Bethlehem to the quiet, persistent growth of faith in our hearts, God’s Kingdom expands in ways we might not immediately perceive. Therefore we are to cherish the means of grace—Word and Sacrament—through which the Holy Spirit plants and nurtures faith within us, never neglecting them. We may not always see the immediate results of our prayers, worship, and acts of love, but trust that God is at work, growing His Kingdom. Let us remain faithful, sowing seeds of faith and love, confident in God’s promise that He will bring forth a harvest beyond our expectations.
