Gifts to Men
Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Gifts to Men
Paul wants you to know about the extraordinary love that your God has for you. When you were still dead in your sin, the Son of God became Man and descended into the world. He interrupted things and fulfilled the Word that was spoken so many years ago. This Word made flesh does all this to give gifts to men... to give gifts to you. What are the gifts he gives you? He works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and grants eternal salvation to you. He uses his Holy Spirit to send it all. The Spirit is the courier. The means by which the grace is delivered is this Spirit. He gives all this to you because of his steadfast love for you.
