The Meaning of Life
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

The Meaning of Life
What is the meaning of life? This is a question that has plagued philosophers throughout the ages. Here, Paul gives us a glimpse of what our meaning and purpose in life are and what a life of genuine love looks like, and he does it in specific detail. It is a life that follows Christ’s example and models His words from the Sermon on the Mount. We all fail to live up to this standard. However, as living sacrifices, we have been transformed to live according to God’s loving will. This serves as a powerful witness to others. God in Christ has first loved us in this way, and by His mercies, our salvation is secure and not dependent on how we love. The meaning of life is simple: love God, and love our neighbor. May we never fail to give thanks to our Father for loving us first and forever by sending His Son and making us a part of His Body. May He continue to train our hearts in hope and our hands in mercy in harmony with Jesus’ words and deeds.
