Preach the Word

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Preach the Word
            What must I do to earn eternal life? This question is often asked by those seeking comfort in a chaotic and confusing world. The truth is there is nothing we can do to earn eternal life. It is a gift from our loving Father. But how, then, do we receive this gift? With mounting rhetorical force, Paul lists a series of questions designed to teach that it is through God’s design that faith is created. And God’s design is the Word proclaimed. Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ is what Paul will reveal in the coming verses. God’s Word is performative; it does what it sets out to do and never comes back empty-handed. Through the preached Word, faith is given and sustained. And that preached Word is Christ crucified for you.
