Jesus Before the Council
When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

Jesus Before the Council
They gathered together to bear false witness against their Lord. They had hardened their hearts against God's Word and his Holy Spirit. The human heart can't comprehend that God could be a man and yet, the Son of God has been born of Mary and took on human flesh. He comes to rescue and to save. He has to go to the cross so that he could have you as his own. In his crucifixion, his Father is glorified. In his cross, he is seated upon the throne of God and your enemies are defeated. Their false verdict sends him to the cross to save you and me. The Son of God buys back the whole world from sin and death. All glory be to Jesus. Amen.
