Redemption in His Blood

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.

Redemption in His Blood
What does it mean to redeem something? Here in Ephesians, Paul uses this language to convey the idea of a payment made to free a slave or captive. This is a common picture for salvation in the New Testament, reminding the hearing of God’s redemptive act for His people during the Exodus. So if we have been bought back, what was the price? To know the answer, we look to the cross. Christ’s blood, shed for the forgiveness of our trespasses, was the price. The cross shows us God’s eternal plan, fulfilled in Christ, for our good and blessing so that we are led to thank and praise our gracious God. Dear Christian, you were bought at a price. You have value and worth beyond compare. The blood of the Lamb has set you free.
